Use of Nanosilica for Increasing Dune Erosion Resistance during a Sea Storm

Dune recovery interventions that integrate natural, sustainable, and soft solutions have become increasingly popular in coastal communities. In the present study, reliability of an innovative non-toxic colloidal silica-based solution for sand dunes has been verified first time by means laboratory experiments. An extensive experimental campaign aimed at studying effectiveness use nanosilica conducted 2D wave flume EUMER University Salento (Italy). The study was based on a horizontal seabed then cross-shore beach-dune profile drawn similar to those generally observed nature. Detailed measurements characteristics bed profiles were analyzed wide range conditions. both cases, two sets experiments carried out. After set performed resembling native conditions models composed with natural sand, effects injection mineral grout investigated. observations show silica increases mechanical strength non-cohesive sediments reducing volume dune erosion, thus improving resistance longevity system.
